Frequently asked questions

How long is the reporting cycle for enrolled agent continuing education?

The reporting cycle is three years.

How many credits do I need during the three-year enrollment cycle?

All enrolled agents need 72 hours of CE during each three-year enrollment cycle. During each year of the reporting cycle, you’ll need at least 16 hours of CE, two of which must be ethics. For example, your reporting cycle could look like this:
Year 1: 22 hours of enrolled agent continuing education, including 2 hours of ethics CE
Year 2: 30 hours of CE including 3 hours of ethics
Year 3: 20 hours of CE including 2 hours of ethics
This would not meet the requirements though:
Year 1: 30 hours of CE, including 4 hours of ethics
Year 2: 32 hours of CE, including 2 hours of ethics
Year 3: 10 hours of CE

When does my Enrolled Agent enrollment cycle start and stop?

Your enrollment cycle is dependent on the last digit of your social security number. If your SSN ends in:
0, 1, 2, 3: Your renewal cycle runs from 2022 through 2025
4, 5, 6: Your renewal cycle runs from 2023 through 2026
7, 8, 9, or no social security number: Your renewal cycle runs from 2024 through 2027.

I got my credential during an enrollment cycle. How many enrolled agent continuing education courses do I need?

If your initial enrollment occurs during an enrollment cycle, you must complete two hours of CE each month and two hours of ethics CE every year until a full enrollment cycle begins.

For example, if you earn your credential in June and your social security number ends in five, you are in the second year of your enrollment cycle. You must complete two credits each month (June, July, August, etc) until the end of the third year of the enrollment cycle. You will also need two hours of ethics for both years. So, in total, you’ll need 38 hours of CE plus four hours of ethics.

We understand it’s complicated, and this is where Becker’s Compliance Tracker comes in handy!

Are the enrolled agent continuing education courses approved by the IRS?
