Utah CPA CPE requirements
After you earn your CPA license, you're expected to keep up with learning, know about changes in regulations and laws, and build your skills through continuing professional education. We're walking you through how to renew your license, the Utah CPE requirements for CPAs, and tips for taking the stress out of earning CPE credits.
How to renew your Utah CPA license
The renewal cycle runs in two-year cycles, beginning on January 1 of odd-numbered years (2023, 2025, etc) and all Utah CPA licenses expire on December 31 of even years (2024, 2026, etc). You'll receive a renewal notice via email from the Utah Division of Professional Licensing at least 60 days before. To renew your license, you'll follow these steps:
- Complete your CPE requirements and report them to the NASBA CPE Audit Service
- Register for an account or login to the UtahID website to get secure access to the Division of Professional Licensing
- Fill out the application renewal and pay the renewal fee
- Finalize the renewal and print out the verification for your records
Utah CPA CPE requirements
Utah CPAs are required to earn 80 hours of CPE during each two-year reporting cycle. Of these hours, you must complete one hour of education on the Utah Certified Public Accountant Licensing Act and three hours of ethics CPE.
Becker's CPE course, Ethics, Integrity, and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct, fulfills Utah's three-hour ethics requirement.
You can meet your requirements through in-person seminars, live webcasts, or self-study options giving you the opportunity to learn in a way that suits you best.

Tips to meet your Utah CPE requirements
We know it's hard to meet your CPE requirements when you're also dealing with work and life responsibilities. To help make it easier to earn CPE and make it worth your time, try these tips:
Choose CPE that suits your schedule
The biggest challenge to meeting your CPA CPE requirements is making time for it. Instead of eight hour seminars, choose one or two-hour on-demand courses, live webinars in the evenings, or other options that let you take CPE when you can easily fit it into your schedule. You can even try CPE podcasts where you listen to the material then take a brief quiz to ensure you understand and can retain the information.
Keep up with your progress
It’s difficult to remember how many hours you've completed over two years, and if you've met the ethics requirements or other specifics. Using Becker’s CPE Compliance Tracker keeps all your CPE in one place (including from other sources) so you can keep up with what you've already earned, what you have left, and get recommendations for courses that suit your interests.
Set aside time every month
Instead of the race to the finish line where you're trying to fit thirty or forty hours of CPE in before December 31, make time to block out three to four hours of CPE each month. You may even consider six or seven hours each month if you want to take a few months off during busy season! Pacing yourself will help you feel less overwhelmed and more likely to take courses that interest you and benefit your career instead of what you can finish up fast.
Consider what you want to learn
CPE doesn't just need to be a box to check to renew your license. Instead, CPE helps you learn new skills that can help you excel in your career. Perhaps you want to specialize in international tax after spending years in personal or business taxation — take CPE courses that help you build that foundational knowledge! Want to specialize in a particular industry? CPE courses in real estate accounting, pharmaceutical accounting, and other areas can make that happen.
