Pharmaceutical: Project Capitalization and Asset Impairment

Pharmaceutical companies are known for their innovative research and development processes aimed at treating various diseases. The cost for R&D is substantive and the chances for success are small. To be successful, companies in the pharmaceutical industry must effectively manage expansions, patents, and new drugs and products. This course will explore the project life cycle from drug discovery to regulatory approval, and the creation of an internally-developed asset, by reviewing industry examples and applying the appropriate accounting treatment to costs at each stage of the process. We will then identify indicators of an asset impairment and the proper financial statement recognition.

This course covers federal tax issues, including the Inflation Reduction Act, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Pillar Two Model Rules, and specific state tax research and development credits that are particularly relevant to pharmaceutical companies.
